DESCRIPTION: In 2021, the Village performed a community-wide roadway assessment that measured the condition of the pavement surface and subsurface. Souwanas Trail was graded as one of the lowest-scoring roads due to failing roadway conditions. In addition to the failing pavement conditions, the Village implemented a rural-to-urban cross section conversion. The conversion replaced the aggregate shoulder section with roadside ditches, to concrete curb and gutter along the pavement edges with a formalized enclosed drainage system. The conversion also provided the opportunity to reduce the pavement area and hence the impervious area within the corridor to promote groundwater infiltration and accommodate new sidewalks without the need to acquire additional right-of-way. The new dual system storm sewers were designed to provide in-line detention, accommodate a 50-year rainfall event, and eliminate flooding concerns from the adjacent residents.
